7 Ways to Survive a Car Fire
A car fire is a dangerous situation that can happen at any time. Being prepared and knowing how to survive such an event is crucial. Today, GP Autoparts will share survival tips for a car fire, along with emergency contact numbers that you should keep handy.
1. Stop the car and turn off the engine immediately
If you smell smoke or see smoke, find a safe place to park as quickly as possible. Avoid parking near flammable objects like gas stations or dry grass. Turn off the engine to reduce the risk of the fire spreading.
2. Get out of the car quickly
Unlock the doors and exit the vehicle as quickly as possible. Help all passengers get out of the car. If there are children or elderly people, assist them immediately.
3. Move to a safe area
Move at least 30 meters away from the car to a safe location. Staying close to a burning car increases the risk of explosion. Avoid being near the car at all costs.
4. Call emergency service
Call the fire department or the relevant authorities immediately. You can contact the following emergency numbers:
191 – Emergency Hotline
1193 – Highway Police
199 – Fire Department
1649 – Emergency Medical Services (Bangkok)
1669 – National Institute for Emergency Medical Services
The quicker you call, the sooner the authorities can respond, which reduces the risk of the fire spreading.
5. Do not attempt to extinguish the fire yourself unless you are sure
If you do not have a fire extinguisher or the fire is spreading rapidly, do not attempt to put out the fire yourself. Fire from the engine or fuel systems can be too severe to handle alone. However, if the fire is still small and you have a portable fire extinguisher suitable for vehicle use, you may attempt to use it.
6. If you cannot exit the car
If the doors are jammed or you cannot open them, use a hard object like a safety hammer to break the side window to escape. Side windows are easier to break than the front windshield.
7. Do not open the hood
If you see smoke or fire coming from the engine compartment, do not open the hood. Opening it will allow air to flow in, which can cause the fire to spread more rapidly.
Fire Prevention in Vehicles
Regular Vehicle Inspections Consistently check the oil, engine, and electrical systems in the vehicle. Regular maintenance is essential to detect any potential issues before they become serious.
Keep a Fire Extinguisher in the Vehicle Always carry a fire extinguisher that is designed for vehicle use. Regularly check its condition to ensure it’s ready to use in case of an emergency.
Avoid Storing Flammable Items in the Vehicle Do not store objects that could potentially explode, such as spare batteries, cans of fuel, or gas lighters, in your vehicle.
At GP Autoparts, we understand the importance of vehicle safety, especially for passenger transport vehicles that carry the lives of many people. Regular checks on your vehicle’s condition, ensuring readiness for emergencies, and addressing issues with the electrical, engine, and fuel systems can help prevent dangerous fires.
To avoid such incidents, regular vehicle maintenance and the installation of safety equipment like fire extinguishers and emergency exits are essential. Additionally, practicing evacuation drills for emergency situations will help passengers respond quickly when facing a real emergency.
